Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students are right below the fourth-grade math and reading levels. We are an inner-city school where the average family falls in the low-income category. We are a small neighborhood Title I Public School and have only two classrooms per grade level. All the teachers, regardless of the grade they teach, have a strong relationship with all the students in the building. We do believe that it takes a village, and when the children graduate from our school, we all take pride in the fact we were all part of the process.
Our students come to school every day ready to learn in spite of the challenges they face on a daily basis.
Because of that, they inspire me to live up to their expectations and give them a reason to overcome some of those challenges and be excited to learn new things.
My Project
There are many uses for Legos in the classroom, but I would use them mainly for math skills and STEM activities. I would like to get students excited about math and science by taking them out of the textbook with more hands-on activities. It would help strengthen students' understanding how are math problems are constructed and solved by creating a framework that helps them engage in math practices, making them tangible and understandable. The
materials can be used in both whole and small group activities, along with independent practice.
Students will use the sticky notes to write notes and solutions to the math problems.
For years, I have been trying to find entertaining ways to teach fractions and multiplication facts that would help the class to a better understanding and I finally found it.
This unique combination of Legos bricks and engaging standards-based projects results in a resource that builds students' awareness to ask questions, define the problems and create solutions on their own. A skill that builds confidence to continue to ask questions and find solutions.
