According to Martin Luther King Jr. "The time is always right to do the right thing!" This is the time for my exceptional needs students to go to the zoo! They will learn so much by seeing the animals they love to look at in books and read about. It will be a first time experience for many students!
Our school is located in an economically diverse area with almost 80% of our students receiving free and reduced lunches.
My students represent a wonderful variety of cultures and span grades 1 - 5. All students are exceptional with their own individual needs. Some students in my classroom are verbal while other students in the class communicate their needs or responses using switches, pictures, gestures or sounds. All students enjoy looking at pictures of animals, hearing stories and listening to the sounds of animals and nature. Students in my class are learning how to approach the world of learning through the eyes of autism, chromosomal disorders and learning delays.
My Project
Going on a field trip to the zoo will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to see and hear real animals. This zoo has a great aquarium including both shark and octopus exhibits. Some students have never been to a zoo before and have only experienced wild animals through pictures, computers or movies. The trip to the zoo will help students understand more about the different animal habitats that we have been studying.
Our class field trip will provide the extra support needed for my students with exceptional needs to see and learn about animals, bugs, fish and birds they have never seen before.
It will also provide the opportunity to build community with the families of students who come along. A day of memories and learning!
