Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Twenty excited kindergartners burst through my door every school day! Our fast-paced schedule is jam-packed with songs, games, and activities as we learn to read, write and count. At this young age, children are full of curiosity and brimming with enough energy to power the whole city!
I teach in a high-poverty, inner-city public school in Indianapolis.
We are a Title I school with 100% free breakfast, lunch, and snack services for our students. Our school has classes from pre-K through sixth grade. Most of my kindergarteners are English language learners. Our classroom is a wonderful place. When you walk in, you can always hear the busy hum of children in both English and Spanish as they work with each other. Our classroom is an inclusion classroom, and one of my favorite things about teaching is hearing my students help, encourage, and care for their peers with special needs. Throughout the year, we work hard each and every single day. We laugh and learn together, cheer on each other's accomplishments, and encourage each other when the work seems too tough.
My Project
As part of our series on community helpers, I would like to transform our dramatic play center into a veterinarian's office.
Kindergarteners learn best through play!
And what better way to explore potential careers than to act them out?
In order to set up dramatic play as a veterinarian's office we will need a vet dress up set, medical kit, stuffed animals, laminating sleeves, and lots of books as well as storage bins and labeling tape to keep things organized.
Once set up, students will be able to use their imagination to play vet! Through this type of play they are learning about goods and services, community helpers, and career options. Their vocabulary will be expanded and their pre-writing skills will be practiced as they tell stories. They will work on writing and math as they write prescriptions and bills. Most importantly, the will be learning through a fun, developmentally appropriate manner which allows them to learn cooperative social skills. Play is the most valuable experience in an early childhood classroom!
