My Students

My middle school is a diverse high-needs school of about 1,400 sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students. Almost half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our hallways are filled with great diversity and I strive to bring this diversity into my classroom and into my curriculum.

My ELLs (English Language Learners) are motivated, intelligent and compassionate individuals who are excited about learning English.

These students come from Central/Latin America and South Asia. They are active learners who are appreciative of the opportunities they are given. Their parents came to this country for a better life, and often work 2-3 jobs in order to provide for their families.

I've been an ENL teacher for 10 years now, and when I first began I NEVER thought that "Financial Literacy" would be a part of my curriculum. However, about 3 years ago, when DonorsChoose joined with PwC to offer funding for financial literacy projects, I really thought about the idea and realized the value and necessity of teaching my ELLs about American money, making change, figuring out sales tax, budgeting, saving for college, etc.

My Project

Thanks to DonorsChoose, PwC, Charles Schwab and countless other generous donors, my students have been able to practice their financial literacy by using play money to "purchase," "sell" and "finance" books from our classroom library. These donors have provided my classroom with 100s of young adult books that my students truly want to read!

I would like to motivate my students to continue practicing their financial literacy by providing them with some newly-released graphic novels and chapter books.

My students earn play money by helping around the classroom, reading extra minutes at home, or at lunch, as well as sharing their book reviews with other students. I don't know if students are reading more because of the wonderful books that we have on our bookshelves, or if they just love playing with the play money that they have in their wallets! Either way, it's a win-win situation.

My students and I are requesting new books for our classroom book store so that students can continue to buy and sell their books. The books will motivate my ELLs to earn play money and in turn spend that money to buy and sell books. This process involves a lot of math and budgeting. My students get exposed to making change, calculating tax and figuring out discounts for sales/coupons. It's an authentic way to develop their financial literacy.
