Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in our school would include students coming to school late, no change of clothes, probably no shower, and with very low academic knowledge. Students come to school and are excited about the technology that our school is offering. We are trying to make all our students tech savvy.
Our school is located in the low-income community of San Bernardino, one of the top 3 poorest cities in America.
Our students need to feel motivated through the encouragement and support of the staff as well as exciting and engaging curriculum. The students have a wide range of abilities, and they vary by age from 4-13 years old. You can see why they may need a variety of materials in order to best fit each of their individual needs.
Our students do not have access to Internet or Wi-Fi at home and usually come to me in the mornings or after school for help with research papers and projects. Our students are so technologically savvy that they are able to manipulate the iPAD and computer to the very best. However, they are not given that opportunity because the resource is simply not there. Students in my class are usually waiting for their turn to use the iPAD and the programs our district has to offer.
My Project
The iPAD will help support the multitude of activities and programs that will support each student. We currently have 5 iPADs for 35 students in our RSP room. They take turns using a variety of applications and programs like ReadNaturallyLive, Achieve3000, ReflexMath, Khan Academy, and PhonicsForReading, all which require the use of the iPAD or computer. The students love accessing the technology, and in this world of advancements in the technology, we must play to their interests.
The iPAD will be used in a variety of ways. They will be able to practice their reading fluency and comprehension through the Read Naturally Live application. They will practice the common core curriculum through non-fiction and informational texts through Achieve 3000 as well as practice for the Smarter Balance Test that is to happen next year. Students will also use the iPAD to practice mathematical concepts through the Reflex Math and Khan Academy apps. These are just a few of the ways the iPAD will be used.
This donation will support our classroom's goal to go paperless and encourage students to continue their love for technology.
It will change their lives because they will finally have access to iPADs in the classroom, when they rarely have access to this at home. This iPAD will help our students practice reading fluency, comprehension, mathematical reasoning, writing, and so many other endless possibilities that the iPAD now offers us. Every student deserves a chance to access current technology.
