Our community is very supportive of our school! My students are bright and eager to learn. They are sophomores, juniors and seniors who are passionate about chemistry and environmental science! Many will be the first generation in their family to go to college. The disparity between socioeconomic groups is stark at my school. I strive to "even the playing field" by providing necessities for all my students. I hope to focus their curiosity to develop critical thinking and a lifetime of learning.
My Project
My students have only had lecture notes to learn about soil and soil composition. Frankly, it gets a little dry (no pun intended).
In order to help them understand layers of the earth and the composition of each layer the students need to be able to SEE the layers. These tools will help us pull core samples and test the chemistry of various types of soil.
Digging, sampling and analyzing is an amazing opportunity and so very interesting! The soil corer is perhaps the most important piece of this project. Not only does it pull beautifully layered samples of earth but it lets students understand the importance. In addition the sample is perfectly tubular allowing for ease of analyzing the sample with the Che knack test kit. The hand held digger or trough will get daily use as we measure. The outdoor meter measuring tape will help us measure in the metric system.
My students love to get outside and literally "go muddin.'" I want them to understand what is in the mud...the good, the bad and the dirty!
