My students are amazing, hardworking children from very different backgrounds. Some of the children are from military families and have traveled the world. Others are from local families who have never left their own neighborhood. 68% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. 49% are African-American, 48% White, 2% Latino and 1% other ethnicities. We are a Title I school in a suburban setting with a large military population. Our school has the highest mobility rate of any in the county with 13% of the population transferring in and out during any given school year. A large number of our students are with us for part of one year, then at another Title I school, then back to us for a period of time over and over again.
LEGO sets are a particular favorite activity for one of my students with autism.
He recently returned to our school and immediately looked for the LEGO bin. Because they are so popular and so durable, they make the perfect Makerspace material. A variety of shapes, sizes and activities make LEGO bricks a favorite from PreKindergarten through fifth grade.
My Project
I teach students in grades Kindergarten through fifth including three special needs classes. LEGO blocks are a favorite Makerspace and Center activity for all ages. LEGO STEAM Park will provide my students with more opportunities to problem solve and work together.
In addition, one of the figures is in a wheelchair, just like some of my students- what a great way to help build their sense of inclusion for all my students.
While we have many LEGO blocks, I would like to be able to save work in progress from week to week. Additional LEGO sets will make this possible.
