Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is full of beautiful, bright and amazing learners. We are a Title I school and are at one hundred percent free lunch status for all students. Despite the challenges that go along with living in poverty, our students continue to arrive at school each day, ready to learn.
Our 2nd grade students need a field trip to the Silver Falls State Park so they can have hands-on science experiences as we study Oregon's ecosystem and landforms.
These kids are survivors and are ready to take on incredible tasks.
Along with poverty, 59% of our students are English language learners and struggle with the balance between becoming proficient in core subjects like reading, writing, and math, and the acquisition of enough academic English to be ready to keep up with their studies. As instructors, my partner teachers and I recognize this struggle and want to make learning fun and memorable. We want to provide every opportunity for our students to experience learning with all of their senses and connect new concepts with real life. A field trip is exactly what these kids need!
My Project
We are so lucky to live in Oregon because of all of the amazing forests and parks that we have to explore. Even though there are incredible mountains, ocean and forests within a few hours in every direction from our school, many of our students have never been to an actual state park. A lot of them have a hard time even imagining what a real forest looks like. When they learn about landforms, erosion, and habitats, they are limited to books and videos for their experiences.
There is no better way to make an impression on children than to take them on a field trip.
We want to take the 2nd graders to Silver Falls State Park to give them a real life experience as we explore what the park has to offer its visitors. Our hope is that these city kids will grow to love the more wild places in Oregon. We want them to understand how lucky we are to live in such an amazing state.
