My students need these book to use for mentor sentences. These books are a wonderful way to show my students how writing should look. When I read First Day Jitters we will look for simple sentences.
My students come from a small community, a country setting, migrant families, and some totally Spanish speaking households. They range in their abilities to speak English, and they have a variety of extracurricular interests from soccer, baseball and football, to Bible clubs, Scouting and singing. They love to eat, talk with friends and learn fun facts about many different things.
My students have a passion for their school, a growth mind set and are trying to live the vision of our school which is "To be one community inspiring all learners to transform tomorrow." Fourth grade is a year of excitement and change, and I sincerely hope that you will choose to be a part of it!
When students walk into my classroom and we all work together I feel all things are possible and development is limitless while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives but, I can certainly place them all in an environment where they can feel as equals in managing their skills, experiences, and involvement during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire each and everyone.
My Project
These wonderful, well-written texts have many uses but I am using them for the well-written sentences in each book. Each book was chosen based on style, language, organization, and conventions. I will read each book aloud and then work on sentences that will show the students what good writing should look like. The students will notice all the good things about the sentence and use those techniques in their own writing. It is also a great way to present grammar and work on it.
My students will begin their work with The First Day Jitters by Julie Dannenberg.
We will look at the sentence "Sarah's hands were cold and clammy". We will look at this simple sentence and understand it only has one subject and one predicate. We will also look at the proper noun and the plural noun in this sentence. We will then use this information and the techniques as each student writes his/her own sentences and their voice can be heard in their writing. We will discover many different concepts in these books as we take a week with each one. By the end of the year we will be writing and crafting our own books and style. Please think about being involved with this project as together we develop my student's English speaking ability and all their writing skills.
