Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Native American students are unique, visual, and intuitive. They perform better with culturally responsive teaching and they love to work in cooperative teams. Technology has opened a window for them to explore and go beyond the boundaries of their beautiful landscape at the reservation.
This is my fifth year teaching STEAM and it has been a very successful implementation of a project-based/problem-solving STEAM class, where students were able to learn Common Core Standards and create hands-on projects.
My students are very creative and insightful, and I was delighted that this teaching approach addressed the different learning styles represented in my classroom.
In addition, their geographical isolation has made students more reflective about the world around them. I want to offer them the best classroom environment to quench their curiosity and develop their STEAM projects in a more comfortable atmosphere.
My Project
I want to give my Native Americans the opportunity to have their own book while we all read it-along. It such a powerful reading strategy where you can implement close reading using post-its to annotate the text and practice think-aloud strategies. It is a complete literacy workshop where everybody can participate and generate questions, predictions, inferences, connections and so forth. Since my students are Native American they can explore through the author Sherman Alexie how they can interact with other cultures beyond the borders of their Indian Reservation. In addition, The Outsiders book will give them a future lesson how to deal with peer-pressure concerning gang activity. It is definitively a win-win these two books!
