My Students

My students are funny and smart, and they try so hard to learn and please their teacher. My class is diverse, and there are many students whose first language is not English. Having hands-on tools available to them is crucial to the success of their learning. They love exploring and being creative in their learning. Some of their favorite things to do are STEM activities and, of course, art. I have some of the most creative first graders!

Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most important weapon which you can use to change the world." I hope that through the education my students receive, this is something they will take away at the end of the year.

My students especially love it when I bring out the hands-on learning tools available in our classroom. It is so fun to watch their minds grow and expand as they are manipulating objects that help to solidify the difficult concepts taught in first grade. In addition to teaching my students' core content, I am trying to teach them that education is powerful, that it will get them anywhere they want to go, and that it will help them to change the world.

My Project

Each year, the first grade teachers in our school try to do a special “Mother’s Day” project with our students. We always let them know a mom doesn’t necessarily have to be someone who gave birth to you, but someone who loves you unconditionally, makes you happy and takes care of your basic needs. In our grade level, we have several students whose mothers are no longer in their lives, making this holiday a little difficult to celebrate. We try to make it a little more special for the kids, and the wonderful humans who are raising these incredible kids. Our hope is to be able to create handprint flowers using the canvas panels being requested in this project. This is a project we have done in the past and the parents who have received their child’s gift have loved that we were able to document how tiny their children once were. I am also requesting a new laminator because the one I have is on its last leg. It takes a very long time to warm up and I am only able to use it for a short amount of time before it stops working. I am also asking for laminating sheets so I can protect the games I make for small reading and math groups. The laminator and laminating pouches will also be used to protect bulletin board materials as well as the occasional art project a student might want to keep in their memory box at home.
