Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine living 20 minutes from the ocean and never being able to put your feet in the water. Or, never seeing exotic animals outside their natural habitats until you reach adulthood. Almost unbelievable, but a sad reality for most of our school's K-6 grade students who have never had these opportunities. These youngsters--products of hard-working farm worker parents-- live quite marginally in our agriculturally-rich Salinas Valley. Growing up in one of California's most violent and crime-ridden neighborhoods, many of these youth face challenges most of us will never know in our lifetimes: homelessness, food insecurity, exposure to drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, broken homes, incarcerated parents, and gang activity. Yet, despite these obstacles, they have dreams and hopes just like any other elementary age youth. For them, school represents a safe haven where they can grow academically, socialize, receive nourishing food, and be reminded that they can be whatever they want to be with effort, a right attitude, and people in their lives who want to see them succeed.
My Project
To coincide with the theme of this year's Scholastic Book Fair: "JUNGLE: Elephants, Tigers, and Books--OH, MY!", our school will be hosting a Family Reading Night to encourage students and their families to enjoy an evening of Read-Alouds and jungle-themed, literacy-based activities. We hope these two events will get kids excited about becoming lifelong readers and learners.
To kick off these events, we have invited two zookeepers from our local zoo to give our entire student body three (3) separate presentations featuring 7-8 different exotic animals found on several continents in the wild.
Students will have an opportunity to "take a trip" through several countries by meeting some of the animals indigenous to those countries. They will learn how these creatures adapt to their different environments and what we all can do to help assure the survival of those animals with conservation. We would use your generous donations to cover the cost of bringing these exotic animals to our school along with two of the zoo's keepers.
We think this is a fantastic way to get our students "wild" about reading AND about the various animals with whom we share our planet!
