Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning we start the day with a chant: "All set?," Teacher says. Students reply, "You bet!" This year I decided to reorganize my class and place my rug in the front of my classroom. This has been a positive change.
I teach in a primarily immigrant and working class neighborhood in Los Angeles.
My students come from supportive families who are involved and concerned. Some of my students are above grade level, some are on grade level, and some are struggling readers. Even with all this diversity, my second graders have one thing in common: they all love learning!
My Project
My students spend at least 50% of class time on the rug. For example, during Language Arts I may preview the next story while my students sit on the rug. Later on, my students are on the rug during the math lesson. I notice when my students are sitting closer together on the rug, they seem to be more engaged in the lessons. My second graders also like to read independently while sitting on the rug, but the rug we have now is in bad condition. They need a comfortable rug to enjoy listening and reading in my classroom. I have also included a carpet sweeper so my class helpers can help keep this rug nice and clean.
This kid friendly rug will greatly benefit my classroom.
It will provide a comfortable place for my students to sit and learn. The animals on the rug will also allow each student to have their own personal space. With a new rug learning can be a wonderful place for encouraging students to read and enjoy literature.
