My students need these models of the human body to help them understand the physiology of the human heart. They will use the Diabetes Organ Model to help them understand how diabetes can damage the body.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Getting to the Heart of the Matter... We all want to improve our health and we can start by educating the leaders of tomorrow in healthy practices. My students are impoverished and many come from one parent homes but when the students are learning and doing science I see smiles. Despite the many challenges they live with, when they complete a difficult project on the human heart I see an excitement for what will come next.
The real joy for me comes when they or a parent email me and tell me their student just graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Audiology, Pathology or that they are a Physician's Assistant.
Incredible considering the meager start they had. But I knew they could do it.
My Project
The heart models will help the students to visualize and understand how the human heart works. Using the diabetes model will help them to get a thorough understanding of how diabetes damages the blood vessels and causes complications to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and other parts of the body. Some of these human body processes are hard to visualize but with the models it will be easier.
The knowledge the students gain will help them to make better dietary choices now and throughout their lives.
Many students will also use this understanding to further their careers in the health and medical fields.
