I am a teacher at a center in Ohio. We are a grant funded center and home based five star program that services families from pregnant moms up to kids age five. We are located in an impoverished area and service numerous homeless families. It is very hard for us to obtain the supplies we would like or need for our classroom.
A large number of our students come from homes that are bad off and may not have an enriched environment to help them grow not just educationally but culturally as well.
Our students will come into our program and some of them may be seeing books and art supplies for the first time. We want to make sure that our students have the exposure to objects that they can't afford at home or their parents have never thought they needed.
Fortunately, I feel that because of the home life most of our students are coming from, they are more willing to learn new things. However, I also feel like because of the same reason most of our kids have a long road ahead of them before they are at that place where learning will come naturally.
My Project
I am asking for a new storage unit for our current musical instruments to call home. I am asking for some new instruments as well so I can introduce my students to instruments they may have never seen. We currently only have rhythm sticks and tambourines as our only selection of instruments.
I would love to make music a fun and inviting area for my students by providing a safe, comfortable, and inviting music area for them.
I would love to be able to show my students that music doesn't just come from a form of electronic device. I think these new materials would be a step forward into making that hope come to life.
