I want to get my students reading! My students are learning Spanish to complete a two year language requirement for graduation. They are great group of students that come from various socioeconomic communities within the same school district, and my ultimate goal for them is to reach a certain level of proficiency in Spanish and to instill in them an overall appreciation for learning language and about different cultures in general. Many students are excited to be in my class, however there are many who I still need to hook.
I'm looking to build my free voluntary reading library so that my students can get lost in the enjoyment of reading every other day by choosing titles that appeal to them.
My students learn the second language in the classroom based on the same principles on how they acquired the English language. I put a lot of my focus on comprehensible input and keeping the class fully in Spanish during the class period. My students are not learning the language based on memorization and day to day grammar explanations which does not lead to proficiency. We tell stories and use the language to get to know each other in class.
My Project
My goal is to build up my Spanish book library with compelling stories so that my students build their acquisition and literacy in Spanish at their own pace and with resources that are interesting to them. Students have the best chance in acquiring a second language through reading. These compelling novels will be available for students to read during our silent sustained reading time which takes place three times per week. My goal as a language teacher is for my students to acquire language, and the best way to do that is my immersing them in listening, reading, and connecting everything we do in class to their interests.
