My students need physical education equipment that will promote movement in a variety of ways, and inspire them to carry over learned skills to their home and/or local neighborhood parks. For instance, soccer supplies, such as the pop-up goals and soccer balls will encourage gross motor coordination, cardiovascular activity, and teamwork.
Our students come from varying backgrounds and SES levels with nearly 94% residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This will be my first year teaching at GRCDC and I am so eager to begin this learning process with my students. Prior to my hire, there was a collaborative effort by the other teachers and staff to provide any means of movement possible to the students throughout their day. This will be the first year that a physical education program is implemented, and there is a need for equipment to fulfill the new curriculum that will be put into place. Similar to any other young learner, these students will flourish given they are provided with adequate tools for success.
My Project
The Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center is an incredible educational establishment that promotes creativity and imagination for children to flourish in their environment. I would love to continue with this philosophy in the physical education setting, to give these children the tools they need to do just that.
My role as the Physical Education teacher at GRCDC is to create new, and plentiful ways for my students to express themselves.
However, with the physical education program being new to the school, the equipment supply closet is quite limited. In turn, this limits the number of activities that can be realized on a day-to-day basis.
I am hopeful that there will be more supplies accessible for my students to foster a creative space that encourages movement and exercise. I plan to use the equipment to support balance and stability, locomotion, aerobic exercise, and strengthening, among many other properties of health for my students. For instance, soccer supplies, such as the pop-up goals and soccer balls will encourage gross motor coordination, cardiovascular activity, and teamwork. I would be so grateful to have the proper supplies that will inspire exercise and movement that are also age appropriate for K-5 students.
