My Students

I teach first grade students at a Title I elementary school in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our school is made up of Pre-K through sixth grade students. One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many of our students receive backpack food on the weekend, and my school also runs a food pantry for our families.

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, our students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom.

However, despite the many challenges they face, they want to be at school. From the minute they walk in the door of our school, we focus on their potential.

Our students love hands-on, interactive activities. They are full of questions and work hard to think outside the box to answer those questions. We work hard to promote a growth mindset. We encourage risk taking and make sure our kids understand that we learn and grow from each attempt we make to achieve our goals.

My Project

In today’s society, technological literacy is a vital skill. But not all students are given equal opportunities to develop these technological skills. As a teacher in a district with a high poverty population, I can see this truth play out every day, as many of my students do not have access to such technology outside of the school day. If I am able to bridge this gap for my kiddos, with your help, there are several ways I plan to utilize this technology in my classroom.

With four classroom iPads, I would be able to create a more reliable listening center for my students.

Currently, I have CD players in my classroom that sometimes work, but more often do not. Being able to listen to entire stories read-aloud will maximize student learning and enable them to hear what fluent reading sounds like. Research shows that when students are able to listen to books, they are more likely to understand what they read! Further, it improves their vocabulary and reading fluency.

In addition to using the iPads as a listening center, I would also like to give my students the opportunity to use apps specifically created to develop their math, phonics, and even social skills.

I hope that with these iPads, students will be more engaged with instruction than ever. After all, technology makes learning fun and I believe all students should be given the chance to access technology on a daily basis.
