I teach all the 600+ students at my Primary School. My students are coming to me hungry, unclean, sick, or just needing a smile. I love the relationships I build with my students, and that they come to me to share their happy moments and their sad moments.
Our school is a Title I school with an average enrollment of 600+ students.
Ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these students are in poverty and/or social service systems. Even with the lack of exposure to technology, these students arrive each day hungry and eager to learn more. We want to bring the technology age to their fingertips through electronic devices such as tablets. My goal is to have a device in each child’s hand to build upon our daily lessons and improve engagement. Children are exposed to an "instant" society that captivates their attention. Holding a 7 year old's attention for an entire school day can be quite the challenge with little to no technology. Students will be able to use these devices to access dozen of activities, learn using hands-on materials through the use of these tablets, and collaborate with peers on projects.
My Project
In morning reading interventions, my students would be able to independently time their readings and record themselves reading their stories. They could also peer assess their readings and develop a personal goal for improvement. This will develop self-assessment skills while still improving reading levels. During lessons, I would like to incorporate student response apps and websites to give me immediate feedback and true analysis of understanding. It would also aid in my efforts to continue cross-curriculum learning while exposing them to museums, historic buildings, and others that their economic class is incapable of experiencing. Being that I see every class throughout the week, this technology will be able to enhance all students here.
After hearing of our project, many community members have sent their old devices until new updated devices can be obtained.
My intervention groups are using the devices, and are asking to use them repeatedly. Their reading scores have improved already! My classes are already anxious to receive their devices and participate in the lessons through technology!
