My students need a way to keep their interactive math notebooks better organized by content. Color coded tabs for each unit will allow the students to easily access any needed information throughout the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a national AVID demonstration school, which means that our students are all AVID students. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
One important organizational tool for AVID is the interactive notebook.
It allows our students to take ownership of their own learning and gives them a way to prepare for advanced coursework in college by learning the process of Cornell note taking. Interactive notebooks are used in all classes including my math class!
Our students are historically underserved and unrepresented in 4-year universities, but are determined and very hard working! If given the academic support that they need, they are going to succeed in college and in a global society.
My Project
The use of interactive notebooks (INBs) is a daily activity in our school, especially in math. Being an AVID demonstration school, our math classrooms use inquiry-based learning through CMP3 curriculum. Students record modeled strategies and examples in their notebook as they collaborate with their peers. The notebooks not only contain examples and strategies, but also important vocabulary and illustrations. What becomes a problem is that the information in their INBs become more difficult to easily access as they progress throughout the school year. When students need to reference how to complete a certain type of problem, they know that they must reference their INB. Even though they are great about doing this, it is often overwelming to students who have organization issues and they miss important collaborations with their peers and valuable instructional time by using too much time searching for needed information. By having labeled, color-coded tabs for each unit in their notebooks, students will be able to avoid organization problems and focus on increasing their learning!
