I teach students in many different grade levels with a variety of intellectual and behavioral disabilities. My students are focusing on developing many different skills, including life and social skills that will help them all throughout their schooling and beyond.
Finding creative ways to teach my students these skills is the key to helping them retain that information and apply it in their day-to-day studies.
I work with a variety of levels, with up to 10 kids in one group ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Each of these students are working at a different level, pace, and have different goals they are working towards.
My Project
Having these materials will greatly help my students in the area of literacy within my special education classroom. The books will allow my students to have access to a variety of books on different levels. Since I am a new teacher, I do not have a large classroom library. My current library currently consists only of about 20 books in various levels ranging from Kindergarten to fifth grade. I love the variety that Scholastic offers and having that variety would allow my students to enjoy their independent reading time and allow me to read books to them that they would benefit from as well. Additionally, the tabletop pocket charts will allow me to provide interactive instruction so I can use their strengths to build skills. Lastly, the new seating options will allow me to pull the groups that I need in order to meet all students' needs in the times I work with them.
With these new books, literacy materials, and seating options, my students will be able to improve their reading skills while being able to read books that they enjoy and participate in interactive literacy activities in dedicated groups to meet their specific needs.
If my students enjoy the books that they read, they are more likely to read more; reading more is the best way to improve your reading! My students are always interested in reading independently on their own levels not only for practice but also because our school utilizes Accelerated Reader. My students have the opportunity to earn rewards for their hard work earning AR points. If they are hands-on with their learning, they always seem to learn more from the work we do together. Given that, my students would benefit greatly from the expansion of our library, new literacy materials, and additional seating.
