I am a Special Education teacher that coteaches in elementary inclusion classrooms and am also starting to run more of a resource room for our students that need specialized support that cannot be met in the inclusion classrooms. Our school is a Title I school with many disadvantaged students. About one-third of our students are from low-income households.
Our classes currently have a variety of students including those with special needs.
They are an energetic group that has various learning styles and needs. The students have enjoyed doing breakout rooms and theme days to enhance their learning and engagement. They are always surprised and enthused to find out what we will do next. I can't wait to unroll more surprises as the year progresses!
My Project
I am looking for more ways to present social and executive functioning skills to my students in an engaging way besides worksheets. I want to give them a chance to read or listen to stories that they can make connections and relate to. Sometimes if students hear it from a relatable situation it is easier for them to process their own feelings and situations.
Students need to see their feelings and actions are things we all feel or have done, but also realize that they affect those around them.
I'm hoping to have a good library of relatable books will help lead discussions and lessons about social and executive functioning skills to help them have more success in school, social settings, and home.
