Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm currently finishing up my second year of teaching at an elementary school. My first two years were an incredibly challenging experience, but my students made coming into work every day worth it. In fact, I've loved working with them so much that I'm looping up with them for a SECOND time and will be teaching 5th grade special education starting in August! In addition to that, I'll be the 4th grade special education teacher still, which means I'll have a caseload of over 30 students. All of these students receive special education services because they have a disability--in some cases, multiple disabilities--that impact their learning to varying degrees.
However, despite these barriers, my students still deserve a rigorous and engaging academic experience.
I know that they're all capable of great things, and I challenge and push them to meet those expectations. Looping up with my students has afforded me the unique privilege of getting to watch them learn and mature on an in-depth level, and this experience has so far been nothing less than thrilling.
My Project
"Ms. W, what do you even DO when you pull groups?" I'm asked this question at least once a week, and sometimes even once a day. Special education is frequently misunderstood, which is unfortunate, because it's a vitally important part of many students' lives.
I'm a special education teacher, and the students on my caseload amaze me every single day.
They are curious, bright, kindhearted, conscientious, and hungry for knowledge. Watching their faces light up when they finally understand a difficult concept or move up a reading level is nothing short of delightful. No matter what else is going on in their lives, they come to school to learn, and I for that I admire them deeply.
Resource time is precious, and quite different from the general education setting. It's flexible and based around students' needs, rather than whole group instruction. It's designed in such a way that the very specific learning gaps of my students are being effectively addressed. We need materials like a tablet, art supplies, reading comprehension centers, math Power Pens and quiz cards, interactive notebooks, and dry erase markers to make small group resource engaging and fun. The items I'm requesting will ensure not a moment of time is wasted. The diversity of the supplies will also allow my students to access tools that suit best suit their learning styles. Hey, there's a reason the "I" in "IEP" stands for "Individualized", after all.
