My Students

I teach kindergarten in a suburban area 23 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. My school district, is 75-100 square miles in Jefferson County. We have 65,000 residents within our school boundary area. Our School District has 17 schools; 2 high schools, 4 middle schools, 11 elementary schools. We educate 12,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The students at my elementary school are in grades kindergarten through 5th grade.

We have an enrollment of 429 students with a 32% free or reduced lunch rate. We have a large special education population at my school with 1 Title 1 reading classroom, 2 autism classrooms, 1 behavior disordered classroom, 2 learning disabilities classrooms, and 2 speech and language classrooms.

My kindergarten students love to come to school to learn new things. The students come from different backgrounds with some having preschool experience and others have not. They are at the beginning stages of learning how to read and need lots of options in books to help them.

My Project

The kindergarten students need lots of books to help them learn how to read. Leveled readers are a large set of books organized in levels of difficulty from the easy books that an emergent reader might begin to the longer, more complex books that advanced readers will select. There are multiple copies of many books that the students can read by themselves. These books can be expensive and my classroom budget is very small.

The students are reading independently at their specific level.

At the end of kindergarten, they are supposed to be reading on a level D. I have found that many of the students are reading at a E, F, or even a G level. I need more leveled books to accommodate these readers that are reading at an advanced level.

It makes my heart so happy to see these kindergarten children learning to love to read.
