My Students
I teach 5th and 6th graders ELA (English and Language Arts) and Social Studies. My students are bright and want to learn, however not all of them are given the tools at home to help them succeed. I have already faced a few challenges in breaking through to them but I continue to remind them that I love them and I WANT them to succeed. I pray that they know that they are smart enough to do just that!
I plan to be the teacher to let them know that they are capable and also that I believe in them!
My Project
There is no doubt that reading is essential to learning. We ask our students to read every night at home and I also expect them to read in my classroom. I teach with novels almost every day and our school has a wonderful library. However, my students need picture books that they can grab off of my bookshelf at times.
Many of these students have never had anyone at home to read to them, either because their parents are uninterested or unavailable.
I have included a selection of picture books, including several by my favorite children's author, Patricia Polacco. Polacco uses many of her books, such as "Bully" and "Junkyard Wonders" to teach important messages regarding self worth. Some of her other books, such as Pink and Say, teach history as well as social justice. All of the books I have selected have lessons to teach, whether they go along with our state standards or they are "life lessons". They are books I will read aloud to my class this year and for years to come because I want my students to know they have a teacher who loves them enough to read to them. I hope that you agree!
