Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fourth grade is a wonderfully challenging year for most students. One of my favorite ways to introduce the children to difficult academic concepts is to allow them first discover the concepts artistically. Art opens the door to rich discussions and wonderful opportunities for writing.
My class consists of 33 very diverse and enthusiastic students who are ready to learn about art and its importance to a dynamic education that prepares them for the future.
The families come from the working-class communities in Richmond, California. Our school is in an impoverished area and is in one of the lowest performing school districts in the state.
Studies show that students who come from low socio-economic backgrounds and who are predominately English Language Learners (ELL) benefit more from arts integration than their peers. Research also finds that communication skills of elementary ELLs greatly benefit from art-integrated instruction.
"The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." President Barack Obama.
Bringing art into the classroom allows students to apply math and science concepts to art design. Increasingly, people who are adept at imagining and creating have an advantage in our global economy.
My Project
The students will work collaboratively, either in pairs or small groups, to create patterns, images, and designs through gelatin prints. They will practice with multiple colors and a variety of items, exploring print making, pattern making, and color.
The print making process, rather than then end product, will be the artistic focus. The use of gelatin printing will allow for many variations. The medium is accessible to all students, and celebrates exploration and "accidents".
The art lessons will be extended to include opportunities for large and small group discussion, writing (both within the narrative and "how to"/expository genres).
This project will allow students to participate positively with an artistic medium, creating beautiful and interesting patterns.
They will have an opportunity to demonstrate their new artistic abilities to peers, teachers and parents. They will gain comfort with artist process and vocabulary, using this new-found vocabulary to engage in classroom discussions and writing activities.
