My students involved in the band program are so high-energy and are always so eager to learn new things on their instrument! These first couple of months at this new school have been a blast with them.
They come to class with smiles on their faces and have shown steady improvement on their instruments over the course of the first quarter.
I can't wait to see where we end up as a program at the end of the school year and where they end up in the next couple of years!
My Project
Starting a brand new jazz band and brand new band program at a brand new school is not an easy task! People usually think brand new schools are fully funded and have everything they need when in reality... they don't. A lot of these students come from programs that have an established music library from years and years of purchases from the band directors that work there. Our school started with ZERO music in the music library, so jazz band music has not been a big priority until now.
Giving these students a method book for jazz band will help their understanding of the fundamentals of jazz, especially at this young middle school age.
Students will get to use this class set of jazz band method books to learn different techniques not typically covered in their normal concert band class. Additionally, students will learn the most important thing when it comes to jazz band--the STYLE. My students will surely enjoy getting some real jazz materials in their hands after going most of the first three months in class without anything other than scales.
