We cannot wait to continue our path towards growing food on our campus that can be eaten in our classroom!
Most of my students live in a local housing project that lacks gardening areas and have had limited access to gardening.
Even though we are an urban school, we have a large garden area that was not fully utilized until we recently received support from a local Boy Scout troop. Eight large raised gardening beds were built as an Eagle Scout project. We have gathered dirt from nearby construction sites, but need to supplement it with more nutritional earth matter.
My Project
Having potting soil and worm castings fertilizer for our raised beds will give my students the chance to actually work in a more controlled environment. It will be a vast improvement as the current garden soil lacks nutritional elements. In addition, we will not have to worry about undesirable plants invading our vegetable gardens.
The garden beds will allow me to teach my students how to garden vegetables and herbs organically and in an environmentally sensitive way.
When the students get to eat and share vegetables that they have grown themselves, they experience immense satisfaction.
I believe it is my job to teach my students to appreciate all that Earth can offer us, starting with food. In addition, working in the garden gives the parents a chance to volunteer and share their knowledge with my students.
