Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom has 30 English Learners that are developing a strong enthusiasm for reading! Many are struggling readers and we have several newcomers with no English. They all come to school ready to learn everyday and enjoy helping each other succeed. We have set many goals and are working towards growing as scholars.
Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California.
Most of our class does not have books or other resources at home, but we're not letting that stop us. My students, their families, and I are working towards a brighter future.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling readers and we have several newcomers with no English, but they all get very excited when they get to take books home. Parents have shown interest in helping their students succeed, but often do not have the resources or education in English to do so at home.
Bilingual books, with English and Spanish text, is one way to help parents get involved.
Though students are developing English, they can use their home language to practice comprehension strategies. Parents are willing to learn the types of questions to ask. Representation is also important. My students will benefit from seeing themselves represented in these books. It will motivate them and their families. I have also included books with no words, so that students can practice using their vocabulary to tell a story.
