My students are English Learners who come from primarily Spanish-speaking families. The parents of my students are highly motivated to provide opportunities for their students to be successful in school. They stress the importance of education to their students and make sure they come to school ready to learn but don't have access to the same types of academic enrichment as some of their English-speaking peers. The English Learners in my class LOVE to read; they are curious about our world and have so many questions about it.
My students always express enthusiasm when I bring out a new informational text, whether it deals with mudskippers or mushrooms.
I'm lucky to work with students who are so intrinsically motivated by the process of learning!
My Project
Since I work with students in grades Kindergarten through Fourth Grade, at varying ability levels, many of my student groups overlap. Sometimes I'll have two third-graders working on a writing prompt in their notebooks, while another student is working on their independent reading log at the back table, and yet another Kindergarten student is manipulating letters on a magnetic tray. I manage much of their homework assignments as well, which can involve them taking home mp3 players to listen to books on tape, Spanish books, forms for their parents to sign, and their reading assignments from my class. It is challenging to always have their materials organized when I have limited time to prepare for each new group that walks through my door.
If my students could keep books, papers, and homework materials organized, it would help us be more efficient with our time.
Students could come in, retrieve their materials, and get started with their reading and writing, as I'm often finishing up with the previous group as they enter. Having a clearly labeled bin for each student will help me to differentiate for their needs as I pull books at their level in both Spanish and English. The bins I've requested will help us accomplish this goal within a small footprint of space! Thank you for your support.
