Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher working in a high poverty bilingual school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my students still work hard and try their best every day. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, interpreters, and questioners. Many of them are being raised in single-parent household or have parents with limited english ability and 99 percent of our students receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
My students are budding mathematicians, scientist, artists, architects, teachers, doctors, interpreters, etc... I want to expose them to as many opportunities as possible to let them see their potential.
I can not control their home lives, however, I can control their experiences during the school day, and I want to make them meaningful.
My Project
At the end of every math lesson students complete an exit ticket to show whether they have mastered the skill being worked on. Currently my students have no way of being able to complete their exit tickets with the privacy they need in order to concentrate. We used dividers in our classroom but the dividers that are left are not enough for every student, are ripped and in poor condition.
For this project I am also requesting turn-it-in organizers for more efficient routines.
After students finish their exit tickets they have no place to put their completed work. I want my students to be efficient and independent because right now it is taking too much time.
Another part of our math routine is something that is called a SPRINT and students complete as many math fact problems as they can 60 seconds. I am also requested the classroom timer which is big enough to be visible to all students and will also allow for students to stay focused during SPRINTS and so they can manage their time in a more efficient way during our math block.
