Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Listen, think, try", is our classroom motto. Students in my class are taught this motto from day one and quickly learn that it's okay to not know, but it's not okay to not try. For most, this is the first time they've attended school, been with English speaking models, and been required to understand not only a new language but a new school culture as well.
Our school has a high percentage at the poverty level and a high ELD group.
Our school is a small, Title I school with only 500 K-5 students, 4 Pre-K classes, and a state preschool. Parents at this school strive to make education a priority, attending Back to School Night, conferences, and Open House in record numbers.
My Project
After two decades of teaching, I have accumulated a wonderful collection of books. I believe that classroom libraries are key in providing an increase in student motivation, engagement, and achievement. Classroom libraries offer ongoing opportunities for teachers to work with students as individuals to find books that will ignite their love for learning.
As a veteran teacher, I know that no book is right for every student, and classroom libraries offer ongoing opportunities for teachers to work with students as individuals.
With the re-organization of my classroom library, I want to motivate students by encouraging voluntary and recreational reading. Having sturdy, easy to handle book bins with clear labels will be an important part of my classroom library. Students will be able to have access, selection, use, and evaluation of their own reading materials, increasing engagement and success.
