Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 22 of the most amazing first grade students. They are creative and imaginative in their thinking. My students are very supportive, caring and respectful of each other. They love to learn and work collaboratively with their peers.
My first grade students would greatly benefit from physical education equipment that makes exercising fun.
Many students are from a lower socioeconomic area of our community. The majority of our students qualify for a free or a reduced school meal program. Due to economic hardships, my students come to school with limited supplies and resources. It is very difficult for their parents to donate to our school.
Despite many challenges, my students come to school eager and excited to learn. As their teacher, I want to provide my students with a highly engaging and motivating learning experience.
My Project
Physical education in our schools is vital to the health of all of our students. Childhood obesity has increased at drastic rate. More and more students are not exercising on a regular basis. Children who exercise regularly have demonstrated growth academically, emotionally and socially. Therefore, I want to teach my first grade students the importance of staying healthy and physically active.
Physical activity in my class will be performed in an environment that is safe, educational and most of all fun.
With these new PE materials, my students’ health and fitness will be positively impacted. These materials will help students by developing their fine and gross motor skills. Hand eye coordination is a skill that will be developed by practicing the spoon and egg activity. Also, students will learn teamwork, cooperative learning and social skills through this activity. Math will be integrated with the jump ropes. Students will jump rope by skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. The PE activity mats will be utilized indoors or outdoors depending on the weather. Each station will be used to increase their mobility, muscle strength and flexibility. Learning a new exercise or skill will definitely benefit the lives of my first grade students. They will learn to become more physically active because of these materials. Hopefully, they will be inspired to integrate physical activity daily into their lives for years to come.
