This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our classroom is an academic support room where students receive small group and individual instruction in order to build stronger math and literacy skills.
Our Special Education students are bright and engaged students, and talented artists, who just need a little bit of extra help to be successful in school!
They are 9-12 graders in a high-need, urban Arts high school.
Students come to the academic support room for extra help to complete class assignments. Additionally, students work with us to build transition skills, apply and prepare for college entrance, to complete job applications, and to develop college and work readiness skills so they are prepared for life after high school. Finally, some of our students experience challenging emotional and behavioral situations. Our classroom is a place where they can work through intra- and interpersonal conflicts, and work on developing positive social-emotional skills in a safe and supportive environment.
My Project
We are hoping to receive bouncy chairs and stools for students to use while studying. Research has shown that allowing students choice and movement in their seating arrangements can greatly improve behavior and academic performance. Alternative seats, like stand-up desks, wobble chairs, and sensory seats help engage students in the learning process. Many students who have difficulty focusing and/or high energy needs benefit from alternative forms of seating that allow them to move without disrupting others. We currently have 1 stand-up desk and a wobble seat in our room. These seats are in high demand! Daily, students request more seating choices to help them focus on learning.
