Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had to sit down for a long time when you thought you were going to burst with energy? My students with autism feel that way most of the day!
I teach nine students on the autism spectrum in a public school in Florida.
Our school is in a high-poverty area but is known for its outstanding ESE department (we have 11 teachers and several therapists). My kids love to learn but they also have sensory and physical needs. They learn best when they're able to move around and use hands-on activities. Their abilities and ages range from kindergarten to fifth grade and some students have intellectual disabilities. One of their favorite times of day is specially designed PE where they can get active with sensory equipment and easy-to-follow games.
My Project
I am requesting physical education and sensory equipment to help my students with their focus during the school day. During this school year, I have partnered with the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) from a local university to look for ways to change the environment when my students get rowdy to continue instruction. One of the ideas was to set up a physical circuit so students could go through it and then return to their seat more relaxed and focused. It works! However, my painter's tape ladder and shoe box hurdles are breaking down and getting torn, so I am looking for sturdier supplies to continue to give my students this opportunity to get out extra energy so they can learn.
Your contributions will go to an idea that is already proven to work.
The students can move through the obstacle course and are more willing to sit, focus, and learn. Please help our special kids get the wiggles out and the knowledge in!
