My students are incredibly hard workers. We are a small school, so every student does a little bit of everything: they go to school all day, participate in sports, show choir, student council, or Y2Y after school, and hold part-time jobs.
These kids are already putting in 14-hour work days before they have even left high school.
They are motivated, mature, and ready for what lies ahead. They're movers, not sitters. They want hands-on learning, not lectures. And more than anything, they need to feel empowered by having more choices built into their school day.
Project Lit is a nation-wide, community-based book club devoted to getting diverse texts into the hands of students and adults alike. Because every book on the Project Lit list is high quality and culturally relevant, our little reading community is devouring books faster than we can raise the funds to buy them! I love seeing students reading alongside teachers and other school staff.
In an effort to build classroom libraries and give students more access to books at their homes, we purchase Project Lit books to gift to students at no cost.
At this time, students who have participated in Project Lit have at least five books in their houses now, five more than they ever would have had without their participation in this club.
