My Students

My classes are comprised of students from diverse backgrounds, interests, learning levels, and language proficiency. Many of our students are excited about learning and we are passionate about providing them with opportunities to build their skill set. Advances in mobile technology and student usage have had a national impact on reading. We have felt this in our own classrooms as our students struggle with reading comprehension.

We need books to increase student engagement to connect learned material through entertaining novels.

Studies have shown students who are interested in a topic will not only learn more, but can also excite other students by sharing their enthusiasm for learning.

My Project

I am asking for a class sets of Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book" to read with my students for our 2nd Grading Period novel study. This fantasy novel centers around an boy raised by a group of graveyard inhabitants - ghosts, spirits, and humans- and follows his adventures both in and out of the graveyard. Gaiman based this story on the Rudyard Kipling classic "The Jungle Book" while putting his signature supernatural twist on the tale. This book has won numerous awards including the Newbery Medal, the Hugo Award for Best Novel, the Locus Award for best Young Adult Novel and the Carnegie Medal.

This project will provide me with 25 novels reaching 100 students this school year and thousands of students over the next decade as this class set will be shared with other teachers.

Collaborating with our English Language Arts teachers, we will create exciting discussions, activities, and assignments to foster student learning.
