Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our grades 9-12 school community encompass a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas all of which help create a diverse learning environment. Many of our students have difficulty seeing the value of education and they have limited resources to help support their emotional, personal, and educational growth.
While I try to do what I can to engage my students it has become an increasingly difficult task.
Like most young adults my students are engrossed in the present (friends and social media) and cannot see beyond that to the importance of their school experience. As a result, students are disengaged in the classroom. Many students have attendance issues, and many also have a difficult time focusing on daily classroom tasks.
My goal is to engage students in their high school experience so that they can take control of their education and their futures!
My Project
I am looking to provide my students with the art supplies needed to be able to step away from traditional forms of communication into the world of creative expression. I want my students to be able to use whatever artistic medium they feel most comfortable exploring. The variety of requested supplies - paint, paint markers, watercolor markers - were chosen to appeal to a variety of students. The double-sided tabletop drying rack will let our artwork dry without damage.
Art can be a powerful communication tool and I want my students to be able to explore this form of communication as it best suits them.
While we will still include traditional forms of communication in our English class I do see the added value of appealing to the different learning styles of all students. Creative expression will help students think about and justify their ideas in a whole new way.
I envision my students using the supplies to track character emotions throughout a reading (through color and other visual representations). I also see my students using the art to develop a deeper sense of imagery described as it relates to the theme, conflict, etc. Students can also use the supplies to create a visual representation of the message they get out of a text. The possibilities are endless and I am looking forward to letting my students creatively express their ideas!
