I teach at a Title I school that has limited resources. My students come from households that are challenged financially and more than half are living at or below the poverty level. Our students receive free lunch, snack, and dinner. These children are being raised by their grandparents or other members, and/or single-parent homes. These students need to learn to survive early on with very little. They certainly do not have what they want; however, they may have little of what they need.
Making do with what they do get is nothing new.
My students appreciate all of it.
After all the help we receive from our friends to supply our learning space with cool and fun stuff, we need help to keep it going in class. We need batteries to help keep our electronics on and on and on and on! My students wear our items out by using them all day. In addition to using our items in class, I allow my classroom families an opportunity to sign games and books out for the weekend or the holidays. It helps make for learning fun at home. However, I can only provide so much, and sometimes my parents will replenish supplies. Every little bit helps.
