This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are absolutely wonderful! They range in age from 17 to 22 and have intellectual disabilities. Our school is a transition center that helps students to become as independent as possible by teaching them daily living and work skills. The students in my class are eager to learn and participate meaningfully in class.
My students will not be defined by their special needs!
They're excited to make their mark on the world, beginning with increasing their independence. They enjoy planting seeds, harvesting food, and having the opportunity to grow plants.
My Project
Gardening supplies are necessary learning materials for an effective horticulture program. Our school has two edible gardens, a small orchard of 43 trees, and a functional greenhouse that are all maintained by the students. The requested supplies will increase learning opportunities inside the classroom. An aerogarden will expand our growing space by allowing students to grow more food inside the classroom. The raised planter box will allow us to bring the garden to students with mobility issues.
We are empowering students by teaching them how to grow food while encouraging healthy, fresh eating.
Our gardens are organic. Students and staff research natural ways to encourage the growth and production of the plants. Students learn that food can be grown inside and outside.
