This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a school-based Speech Language Pathologist in a Title I School. Many of my students do not have the best home lives as some situations may/may not emotionally be brought to school. I always remind my students that they are smart, special, strong, blessed, and kind. These school-wide affirmations constantly remind them of who they are and that they are more than capable of achieving their goals and dreams.
They need access to tools to broaden their horizons and expand their knowledge of the world beyond their neighborhoods.
As it is my responsibility to progress effective communication, I strive to engage students in speech activities that are fun, creative, and interactive. This helps set the seal on students becoming alive during therapy and forgetting they are actively learning. My students take pride in their work and are filled with much potential as well as curiosity.
My Project
Having students come to school well-nourished and ready to learn is absolutely critical to their well-being. It is also critical in my work to improve student outcomes, especially through speech therapy. Students who are hungry cannot concentrate on learning, because they are focused on their hunger. Hearing a student(s) stomach rumble during therapy sessions is heartbreaking, and often justifies him/her not being focused on the activity.
These snacks will be given to students during therapy sessions that are known to be hungry more often than others and/or who’s stomachs may rumble during therapy.
The deodorant will be given to students whom come to school but may not smell fresh. Toothbrushes and toothpaste will be given to students to freshen their breath. These items will be given discretely to students in need, with respect given to their confidentiality.
By gifting my students with snacks and deodorant/toothbrushes, improve their confidence, self-esteem, focus, and help them feel fresh at school and during therapy. Though I may not be able to provide a home or shelter for my students that are displaced, having these items will help.
