My students attend a Title I school. What that means is that the students may come from a very low economic group of families. They may have some challenges in their home lives. Our school becomes a place where they can seek and receive love - a safe place for them to connect with their teacher, friends and receive lots of love and positive encouragement.
They are super-excitable, energetic first graders who are just beginning their educational journey and need all the positive encouragement and love they can get to develop their passion for learning!
They love school and routine, they are talkative and social, they tell stories and share. We may have some challenges along the way, but with kindness and positive prompting, they can be successful at school and feel proud of the work they are doing and not judged by others. They are full of potential that is just starting to be tapped and explored!
My Project
Movement is especially important to my first graders. Some of them may have difficulty sitting still and focusing all of their energy on the lessons being shared, but with flexible seating they have the opportunity to move and still be engaged with learning - they don't need to choose between the two; they are less distracted.
With the seating options I have chosen, specifically the yoga balls, it will allow my students the opportunity to wobble, rock, bounce and use that excess energy they seem to have in abundance and allow them to continue to be actively engaged with learning.
The stools I selected can be utilized for small group activities and give the students another variation in seating options. Flexible seating just gives my first graders a chance to be active all day and I know it will allow their for their learning to be more focused; and, as an added bonus, it can help to develop their core strength and improve their posture!
