As a teacher in a school that is faced with the challenges that occur from being populated by students who come from low-income households, I often supply my students with what is needed in order to be successful. Many do not come to school ready to learn because they are lacking supplies, deprived of sleep, or even hungry.
Despite the challenges they face, my 3rd-grade students are amazing and caring!
They are eager to learn, excited to explore, and fascinated by everything! My students love reading, math, science, and social studies. Most importantly, they love school! Many of my students spend most of the day at the school (even after hours) because they love to be here! My school provides a safe, loving, and nurturing environment that allows them to feel successful and loved. My students are not just my students, they are the future, and I want to provide them with every opportunity to break free from the barriers that could potentially hold them back.
My Project
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? We have all heard that question at least once in our lifetimes. Life cycles are a difficult concept to teach young children when your only resources are books. The overwhelming majority of my students have no first-hand experience that would allow them to better grasp this concept. We will be studying life cycles of a variety of species, one of which is the chicken.
With the incubator, my students will be able to experience the excitement firsthand.
Students will be responsible for monitoring and tracking the eggs, as well as graphing and journaling about their observations.
It is my hope that this project provides my students with an authentic learning experience that they will remember the rest of their lives!
