My students are an amazing group of 4 year olds! Their smiles inspire me to be a better teacher every day. However they come with their own personal baggage, even at their young age.
All of our students are at risk for different reasons.
They come from families with limited language and all qualify for free breakfast and lunch based on their families low income status. Some of my students come from refugee families escaping the hardship of war. Despite these factors, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They are bright and are eager to come to school in order to experience things they normally would not be exposed to at home.
My Project
Young children learn by imagining and doing. The materials I have chosen will help my students expand their play in our dramatic play area. My students have been very interested in dressing up, playing with babies and pretending to be doctors. Using the Multicultural dress up clothes the students can act out the roles of being different people in their community and become different characters. The highchair and the doll carrier will be used with our baby dolls so that they can be better incorporated in their play in the house area. The doctor kit will be well used as both a vet kit and a doctor kit by the students to help heal our stuffed animals and our friends!
When a child engages in pretend (or dramatic) play, they are actively experimenting with the social and emotional roles of life.
By helping build up our dramatic play center, you will help my students in more ways than just playing! Through cooperative play, they learns how to take turns, share responsibility, and creatively problem-solve. When a child pretends to be different characters, they have the experience of "walking in someone else's shoes," which helps teach the important moral development skill of empathy. Children also build their self-esteem when they discover they can be anything just by pretending!
