Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very insulated in their urban, high poverty community. It is important that they expand heir world by becoming aware of national and international current events and the latest in science news. Expanding their world will help them expand their goals.
My students are in fifth grade in a high poverty area in New York.
They attend a public school where over 95% receive free lunch. Many have not traveled outside of their immediate neighborhood. Most are reading and writing below grade level. They are intelligent and curious and want to learn more about their world.
My Project
Reading these magazines will promote high level thinking, writing, and discussions. My students will become motivated to do additional research and will want to write about their findings. Reading the plays will allow them to learn more about history and about fables. Plays improve fluency and are great classroom community builders. Students will use these plays to begin writing their own plays. These reading materials make reading relevant and fun. They motivate students to think more deeply about the world in which they live.
Students will develop a global perspective.
They will read about what is going on throughout the world. They will want to discuss, and debate current events. They will be motivated to research new scientific discoveries. They will become more fluent readers who begin to see the joy reading can bring to their lives.
