This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Head Start class consists of a diverse group of three to five-year-olds who live in the inner city of Camden, New Jersey. This is an economically challenged community. Many of my students live in homes with older and younger siblings. My students come to school everyday excited to find new materials and special friends. My students love to explore and create and they are most excited when they are able to use materials to solve problems.
My Project
In our class we connect learning to every area. These dramatic play materials will be no different. Students will use dramatic play food and other props to connect to home life skills as well as social emotional learning by have "parties" going "shopping" and even "cooking" meals for each other. During these activities students will practice sharing, taking turns, balancing the needs and rights of others, engaging with classmates and solving social problems. Students will also use these materials to enhance math skills such as sorting, matching, one to one correspondence, counting and quantifying. Of course language and literacy skills will developed and physical skill will be enhance. Helping our class get these materials ensure my students are cooking up academic and social emotional skills that will last a life time.
