As a teacher in a high-poverty school district, I work with students that are faced with challenges in and outside the classroom. Despite the challenges my students face, they persevere. My students are high energy, communicative, and enthusiastic learners. They have a lot of energy and are always looking for a fun way to learn. They love to get involved with the lesson in whatever way possible.
My students love to show off their work and teach their peers.
They are excited to teach each other, both in groups and in front of the class. My students are visual learners. They love to use different resources in the room to show learning strategies to their friends. The students are a great group of mathematicians, scientists, writers, and artists.
My Project
Over the years I have discovered that students love to cook in the classroom. We have made mug cakes, fruit salad, ice cream, hot chocolate, and smoothies/milkshakes. Unfortunately, in order to do any type of cooking right now, I have to bring all the material we need from home.
Having a crockpot, blender, and measuring cups in the classroom will allow my students to cook in the classroom more often.
Through cooking students not only get to work on healthy eating skills, but we can also incorporate math and language arts. Cooking allows students real-life examples of how to use fractions as well as practice reading and following directions.
