Our school is in a low-income, rural community. We provide public preschool for children deemed at-risk. Many of our students would not be able to attend a private preschool program. Part of our PreK's goal is to identify children with special needs and begin the intervention process. ESL learners are able to practice English before heading into school. With Early Childhood Education, we strive to prepare our children for Kindergarten, so that they do not struggle and grow to hate school. We are also an inclusive program, and have several students with special needs in our class full-time.
We lived in a high tech, fast access world these days. Take-out food is cheap and easy but it comes at a price. Children who don’t see their parents cooking are more likely to grow up unable to cook for themselves. Children are also spending more time on tablets and less time playing with toys.
Pretend play is a great way for children to develop an interest in cooking and other home life skills.
Our dramatic play center is one of the most popular areas in the room. Children love to act out home scenarios! Toy food and kitchen accessories invite children to play "grown ups" while learning valuable cooking skills. The wooden cutting sets will give my students a chance to handle a knife in a safe manner while developing fine motor skills. The ice cream, pizza, and cookie sets connect to several books in our curriculum, and will be used as literacy extension. They won't know it, but they're also be getting a math lesson in parts and wholes! The coffee maker and mixer will let children explore items they might not be allowed to touch at home, and the mixer will also give them a chance to create their own recipes. The high quality wooden toys will be enjoyed for years to come!
