Students in our classes differ in culture, language, socio-economic levels, race, and academic and social skills. Yet they all come to our classes to learn to read. Some students need additional supports to achieve this goal.
Our classrooms are in a small school in an urban setting.
We have a diverse school demographic composed of students rich in culture and language. Our international students range from those visiting from around the world as their parents attend graduate school to those eligible for refugee status. We have students who have faced crisis, living in transitional housing. We have students that have special needs and students that are advanced learners. Our classrooms are small models of the real world and we work hard to ensure equity for all.
My Project
Our classrooms have 2 grade levels and a range of learning styles, skill-sets, and interests! We are hoping to utilize these materials to help engage students in math with hands-on materials for lessons and small group work.
All of our lessons are taught in small groups, so we need materials that help students work independently as well as instructional materials so that we can teach a range of skills.
These materials will help us to teach our students, providing them with manipulatives, games, and activities that reinforce our instruction and solidify math concepts. In this project, we are asking for magnetic fraction bars, number bonds models, bar models that are hands-on, fraction magnets for instruction, dry erase boards, and fraction games for students to work on independently.
Also, as a motivator for our students, we are also requesting cooking utensils so that we can have math lessons centered around cooking! Our fractions unit will be so much more fun with the real-life application with cooking. Students will be able to plan, mix, and make different foods in our classrooms to apply math to daily life!
