I work with a group of students with intellectual disabilities, including autism, in a middle school setting. Our school is in a small tight-knit community, and many of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the many difficulties they are faced with, my students have the drive to succeed.
These students work hard to overcome obstacles and meet their goals.
I have high expectations for them and push them to achieve at a higher level each day. They rise to the challenge and are always very proud of their accomplishments.
My Project
My students run three small businesses, which help them learn valuable vocational skills. We have a small restaurant, Cafe 45, where we bake cookies to sell to other students and make lunches to sell to staff. The students' faces light up when their customers come in.
The skills my students learn in middle school provide a good start to a successful, independent future.
The students will use the stainless steel prep table and anti-fatigue mat to help make their food preparation easier, with added space in our kitchen. A new iPad will allow us to use the Square POS system, which will give them experience with a real-life cash register.
